I played this game more than thousand hour but i never finish it, now i know i was this close from the end, too sad i died before i reach the final battleship
How does exactly Gradius sprites work? I mean, suppose the ship takes 2 sprites to render (the white part, and the color part - which is either the red cockpit or the blue shadow), then you have at least 2 "options" around you most of the time, then you have missiles... plus some of the enemies are not made up by characters. That's a whole lot of sprites, and you can have only 4 per line simultaneously before it flickers. But I don't remember it flickering too much.
Because the games were shit? Compared to machines at the time. I'd even say the 1982 Spectrum 16K had better games than this, only the sound sounds a bit better on MSX, but not as good as the C64's SID.

EURO COMPUTERS ARE SHIT (Amiga, Atari, ZX) EURO CONSOLES ARE SHIT (Jaguar, CD32, GX1000) EURO GAMES ARE SHIT (literally all of them lol) These are well understood facts among serious gamers, It's Japan, then US a distant 2nd, then Eurotrash 3rd. (Yes, that was the actual term back in the day!)
EX Heihachi The 80's were dominated by good quality EU games, superior to most other home computers, even to consoles. The 90s and since I was into the PC computer scene and never looked back. Consoles became for the poor spoiled kids who didn't appreciate thinking games, but wanted a shoot em up in good graphics. Strategic and complex games were all Amiga/PC until the 3D cards became available, after that the cutting edge of video gaming has been PC ever since.
EX Heihachi The best software from 1981-1985 from the US came out on Atari and C64, which pretty much looked the same in graphics and execution. From 1985 the US was parked by games from Europe, mostly the UK and the C64 versions were the best versions in most cases (some were primary for Amstrad and Spectrum had had not so convertions to the C64). Soundwise the C64 were best in all systems up until Amiga/Atari ST came out with good games. Name me a handfulll of original MSX games that came out, where the C64 versions were of lesser quality. I would be interested to hear this. The MSX never became a major system in Europe, except for some Spanish and French titles, but no bestsellers as I can remember.
この作品でMSX1の性能を最大限に引き出したと思う。
初めてのプレイで、1プレイヤーを選択した直後のSCC音源でゾクゾクッとしたし、グラフィックで魅了されたし、神殿ステージの仕掛けにド肝抜かれたし、追加オプション要素に開発者の本気度を見た。
今でも、あの感動を覚えてる。
One of the best games to grace early home computers and the inclusion of the SCC was genius.

アーケードとは異なる異色の作品。特に3面の神殿ステージ曲には聴き入ったなぁ…結局どうしてもクリアできなかった。このゲームをクリア出来る人は凄いと今でも思います。

Great memories from when i was a kid. And it was great to see the hidden stage going into the boss's eye, it blew my mind when i did that.
カートリッジの裏技はサラマンダをスロット1、グラ2をスロット2に挿してプレイすると、サラマンダの真のエンディングにたどり着けるとか、10倍カートリッジをスロット2に入れて対応するゲームをスロット1に入れると少し楽できる、とかありましたね。
懐かしいなぁ。ステージ毎に装備が増やせるシステム。ファミコンにはない仕様でしたね
I still love those mountains...if you know the graphical limitations of the msx1 they are even more awesome.

ラスボスは、撃ちながら雷避けて斜め下へ前進、撃たずに弾避けバックの繰り返しでクリアしました。
何度もミスって復活して最高に緊張&感動のエンディングだったけど、ネットで安全地帯の存在を知ってショックでした。
